Types of Dental Emergencies
While true dental emergencies are rare, here are the most common issues you’re likely to come across with your little ones’ dental health.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and try to place it back in the socket or store it in a cup of milk. Contact our office immediately for the best chance at saving the tooth.
Loose or Misaligned Tooth
If your child’s tooth feels loose or looks out of position after an injury, apply gentle pressure to stabilize it or have them bite down softly. Don’t try to force it back into place. Call us right away so we can evaluate the injury.
Chipped or Cracked Tooth
Even if your child isn’t in pain, a chipped or broken tooth should be examined quickly to prevent further damage. Avoid chewing on the affected side, and schedule a visit with our team as soon as possible.
Abscess or Dental Infection
A dental abscess is a serious infection that can lead to swelling, pain, and potential spread if untreated. If your child complains of severe toothache or you notice swelling, reach out to our office for emergency care.
Broken or Damaged Appliance
A broken bracket or wire can cause discomfort and injury. Contact our office immediately to prevent further irritation or damage. We’ll make fast repairs to keep treatment on track.
Facial Trauma or Fracture
If your child experiences a facial injury that may involve broken bones or teeth, seek medical care first. Once stable, we’ll assess and treat any dental issues caused by the trauma to protect their smile.
